Mijas celebrated Tourist Day this Wednesday with an event organised by the Town Council, through the Department of Tourism, in the plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo. The programme combined flamenco, food and crafts. The programme began at 12:00 with a flamenco show. From 13:30 onwards, a free tasting of paella and sangria was offered. The celebration coincided with the craft market held on Wednesdays in that same square. The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, stressed the weight that tourist activity has for the municipality's economy. "We are an eminently tourist municipality on the Costa del Sol and a very important part of our economic and business fabric depends on this activity. That is why it is important to celebrate this day and thank those who visit us for continuing to choose Mijas as a destination," he stated. Jerez added that one of the objectives of the Department of Tourism is to extend the activity beyond the summer months. "We must continue promoting Mijas abroad to attract visitors throughout the year. The challenge is especially in winter: we want our hotels, restaurants, taxis, shops and golf courses to maintain their activity also outside the high season, because many jobs and a fundamental part of the municipality's economy depend on it," he explained. According to the Town Council, Tourist Day has been part of Mijas's tourist calendar for years and constitutes a day of recognition for those who visit the municipality each season.
