The Port of Málaga has carried out for the first time the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to a cruise ship by transferring the fuel directly from one ship to another, a modality known as ship to ship. The operation was carried out last October, according to the Port Authority of Málaga. The vessel that received the fuel was the 'OE Corinthian', a 220-metre-long sailing cruise ship of the Orient Express brand. The vessel combines a hybrid propulsion system powered by LNG with three large rigid sails that allow wind propulsion to be used when conditions are favourable. The supply was carried out by the 'Alisios LNG', a vessel specialised in the supply of liquefied natural gas managed by the company Axpo, which delivered 300 cubic metres of LNG to the cruise ship through a direct transfer between both vessels.

A three-year journey in alternative fuels

It is not the first time that the Málaga port area has provided this type of service. In November 2023 it carried out its first LNG supply to a cruise ship, the 'Silver Nova', although at that time the fuel arrived by tanker trucks. In March 2025 it hosted the first LNG supply operation to a container ship from another ship, a manoeuvre also carried out by Axpo to the MSC Cargo vessel. In September 2025 it was the setting for the first bio-LNG supply to a container ship, the 'MSC Gabon', likewise by ship to ship. In addition to these milestones, there are the periodic LNG supplies that have been carried out since 2020 on the maritime connection between Málaga and Melilla, through the vessel 'Rusadir', of Baleària. The incorporation of new supply modalities allows the port to serve an increasingly diverse fleet and the growing demand for alternative energy solutions in maritime transport. This activity is part of the Puerto Verde initiative, with which the Port Authority promotes sustainability, energy efficiency and the transition towards fuels with lower environmental impact.
