Antequera celebrates Santa Eufemia with a procession and the diocese's oldest mass
This Sunday, the Málaga town holds the procession of its patron saint, with a route through the historic centre, and is preparing for Wednesday the 16th the votive function that has been celebrated since 1410, according to the note issued by the Diócesis de Málaga.

The procession of Santa Eufemia, patron saint of Antequera, set out this Sunday at 18.00 hours from her temple. The route continued along calle San Pedro, where towards 18.45 hours a prayer took place before the portico of the parish, joined with that of Santiago, to which the image belongs. At that point the first of the three candles planned for the patron saint was offered.
The Agrupación Musical La Estrella de Jaén musically accompanied the passage of the image. From there, the itinerary continued towards the Cruz Blanca, calle Lucena and calle Duranes, continuing through the Plazuela Puri Campos and the Acera Alta until reaching the Plaza de San Francisco around 20.00 hours. There the second candle was lit, before the temple of San Francisco, which this year marks 800 years since the death of its founder.
The route ended along calle Juana Jugán and the Cristo de los Avisos until the Carrera de Madre Carmen, with the return to the Plaza de Santiago expected around 21.00 hours, where the third and last candle was offered.
Prayer and votive service
On Tuesday 15 September, at 23.30 hours, the devotee Teresa Molina will pray to the Saint on the eve of her feast day, with a candle in the Plaza de Santiago. On Wednesday 16 September, the day of Santa Eufemia, the temple will remain open from 11.00 to 13.30 hours and from 17.00 hours until the votive service, which will begin at 20.00 hours.
The mass, presided over by the parish priest Francisco de Paula Aurioles, is according to the note from the Diócesis the oldest one celebrated in the whole Diócesis de Málaga. It has been offered since 1410, when the infante don Fernando, later known as «el de Antequera», reconquered the city and gave it its patron saint, its coat of arms and its first alcaide.
