Universidad de Málaga

Public university

The city's public university. Almost all its faculties are on the Teatinos campus, to the north-west; the El Ejido campus, next to the historic centre, houses Architecture, Fine Arts and Economics, and the Rectorate building is on Avenida de Cervantes.

Pre-enrolment isn't done at the university but through the Distrito Único Andaluz, the shared system of Andalusia's public universities. Pre-enrolment phone numbers: 951 95 26 55 for undergraduate degrees and 951 95 33 60 for master's degrees.

It isn't a university: it's a centre affiliated to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, which awards its British degrees, and it is also authorised by the Junta to teach higher arts education in Design, which are official Spanish qualifications equivalent to a degree.

It's worth knowing which qualification you get in each case: the degrees are British, except Design, which is Spanish higher arts education equivalent to a degree.

Coming to study from outside?

What isn't in any enrollment guide and gets asked every year.

How to get to Málaga

Málaga is very well connected, and best of all, the airport, the train station and the bus station are practically next to each other. The same local train links all three with the centre.

  • By train, to María Zambrano station, where the high-speed trains arrive and both local train lines start: the Fuengirola line and the Álora line.
  • By plane, to Málaga-Costa del Sol airport. It has a local train station INSIDE: the Fuengirola line stops at the airport and at María Zambrano, so you can connect plane and train without a taxi.
  • There's also an express bus between the airport and the centre, and direct buses to Marbella, Estepona, Nerja and Alhaurín de la Torre.
  • The bus station is on Paseo de los Tilos, next to María Zambrano.

Where to live

The UMA has its own Accommodation Service and it's free, both for people looking and for people letting. It offers four different things, and it's worth knowing that hall of residence places can't be applied for whenever you like: they're offered through a call for applications once a year, in spring.

  • Its own hall of residence: the Alberto Jiménez Fraud, with two- and three-bedroom flats sharing a bathroom, living room and kitchen. Family income, distance from home and academic record are taken into account.
  • Partner halls of residence: private ones with an agreement with the UMA. The university also offers subsidised places in them.
  • Housing listings: whole flats, single rooms and rooms with a family, sorted by area.
  • And homesharing with older people: you live in an older person's home in exchange for company and small tasks.
  • We don't give prices here: they change every year and there are extra charges, such as electricity and water, split between flatmates. Check the current year's call for applications.

Getting around Málaga

There are three networks: city buses, the metro and local trains. And one card, the Transport Consortium card, which works on all three and lets you change between them. There are discounts for young people.

  • The Consortium's Youth Card is for under-30s and works on city and metropolitan buses, the metro, the tram and both local train lines, with transfers between them. It's the most complete option if you're coming from elsewhere.
  • The EMT Youth Card, the City Council's one, is available from 16 to 30, but the bus discount only applies up to and including age 25.
  • For the second one, studying at a centre in the city of Málaga is enough: you don't need to be registered as a resident.
  • CAREFUL: the EMT «Student Card» is NOT for university students. It's for ages 3 to 15. If you go for it, you'll queue for nothing.
  • We don't give fares: the current discounts include a state subsidy with an end date. Check the current ones.

Seeing a doctor

It depends on whether you're staying to live here or only coming for the academic year. Both options are fine and both are covered by the Servicio Andaluz de Salud, which specifically mentions people coming to study in Andalusia.

  • If you keep your home region's health card you count as a temporary visitor: for a one-off or urgent matter, just go to the health centre with that card and your ID.
  • If you'll need a doctor several times during the year, ask to be assigned a GP and health centre here, at the one nearest to where you live.
  • If you register on the census and become a resident, you can apply for the Andalusian health card. The first time you have to go to the health centre in person.
  • With any public health system card you can collect your medicines in a different region from the one that prescribed them.

Registering on the census (padrón): you need it for the doctor and for your ID

Málaga is on the mainland, so there is NO resident discount on flights or ferries HERE: that only exists on the islands and in the autonomous cities. But the padrón is useful for other things you will need.

  • It's the requirement for the Andalusian health card: they ask for a census registration certificate. Without the padrón you can only use the temporary visitor route.
  • You need it for ID card, passport and driving licence procedures, and for municipal grants and services.
  • It's one of the three routes to the EMT Youth Card, although studying in the city of Málaga also counts.
  • And it's a legal obligation: anyone who normally lives in Málaga must register here.
  • It's done at a citizen service office, by appointment, or entirely online if you have a digital certificate.

Procedures: what needs to be done and in what order

There are no dates or prices here on purpose: they change every year and only the university's own ones are valid. What is here is the process and where to do each thing.

Pre-enrollment: applying for a place

It's the first step and the one most people confuse with enrolment. Pre-enrolling means APPLYING for a place; enrolling means accepting it and paying for it. In Andalusia you don't apply university by university: you make ONE single application for the nine Andalusian public universities, through the Distrito Único Andaluz.

When: There are three phases: the one for international applicants in early spring, the ordinary one after the university entrance exams, and the extraordinary one at the end of the summer, with the places left over. The ordinary phase is the main one.

  • You apply for several degrees in order of preference, not just one. The Distrito Único itself recommends applying for many: the cut-off mark may rise compared with last year.
  • It's submitted online, in a single application for all the degrees you're interested in.
  • Several rounds of placement come out one after another: if you don't get in on the first one, you may get in on the next.
  • After each round of allocations you have to log back in and reserve the place or stay on the waiting list. If you do nothing, you lose it.
  • Once you've been allocated a place, you move on to enrolment, which is done at the UMA.
Cut-off grades

The cut-off mark isn't a pass mark or a fixed requirement: it's the mark of the LAST person who got into that degree at that centre last year. It depends on how many places there were and how many people applied, so it's a guide, not a reason to rule yourself out.

When: Check them before pre-enrolling, to put your choices in the right order. This year's aren't known until the whole process is over, in the autumn.

  • You can look them up in the Distrito Único's official search tool, filtering by Málaga and by degree.
  • It's worth comparing several years in a row, not just the last one.
  • In your application, include degrees both above and below your mark, not just the ones that match it.
  • Having a higher mark than last year's does NOT guarantee a place: the official website says so itself.
Enrollment

It means accepting the place, choosing your subjects and paying. It's done online, through what the UMA calls self-enrolment. Each student has an assigned day and time, and you can't get in earlier.

When: Right after you're allocated a place, in the summer and early autumn. The deadline is short: missing it means losing the place.

  • Wait until you're allocated a place and given your enrolment day.
  • Get your UMA PIN, the code the university gives to people coming through pre-enrolment.
  • Read the year's enrolment guide, which the UMA publishes on that same page.
  • Log into self-enrolment, choose your subjects and payment method, and keep the receipt.
  • Take the documents the guide asks for to your faculty's admissions office.
Grants

They're two different things and it's best not to mix them up: the Ministry's general grant, which is the main one, covers tuition and can include help with living away from home; and the UMA's own grants, which are smaller and for specific situations.

When: The Ministry's opens BEFORE enrolment, in late spring, and closes in early autumn. You can apply even if you don't know your degree yet and aren't enrolled.

  • Check the financial and academic requirements on the Ministry's website.
  • Apply online before the deadline, even if you don't have a place yet.
  • When you enrol, state in self-enrolment that you've applied for it.
  • Check the UMA's and the Junta's own calls separately: they have their own deadlines.
Your degree certificate and transcripts

Finishing your degree doesn't give you the certificate automatically: you have to apply for it and pay a fee. While the physical certificate arrives, which takes a while, you can request a provisional certificate that is equally valid for jobs or public-sector exams. Separately there's the European Diploma Supplement, which explains what you studied in the common European format and is mainly useful for going abroad.

When: As soon as all your subjects are passed and your record is closed.

  • Apply at the admissions office of the faculty where you finished your studies.
  • If you need it sooner, also request the provisional certificate: it isn't issued automatically, you have to ask for it.
  • The certificate is collected IN PERSON at that same faculty, with your ID. You can authorise someone else using the official form.
  • If you live in another city, they can send it to a Government Delegation or Sub-delegation office, or to a consulate. They don't send it to private addresses.

Enrollment deadlines, cut-off grades and each year's course offerings change every year and only the university's own ones are valid. Here are the links and phone numbers to reach them; check everything else on their website before deciding anything.
