The PSOE brings a motion to committee against the cost overrun of the Pedregalejo works
The socialist municipal group asks the Ayuntamiento de Málaga for accountability over the cost overrun of more than 850,000 euros in the Pedregalejo seafront promenade and warns that it should not happen again in the upcoming El Palo project.

The PSOE municipal group at the Ayuntamiento de Málaga will bring a motion to the Urbanismo commission next Thursday regarding the remodeling works of the paseo marítimo de Pedregalejo. According to the motion, the works have had a cost overrun of more than 850.000 euros, as drainage works were not initially included, and have caused delays and damages to residents and hospitality businesses during the summer.
The socialist spokesperson and Urbanismo lead for the group, Mariano Ruiz Araujo, recalls that the work was awarded in 2025 for 5,7 million euros and that, according to his calculations, it will end up costing more than 6,5 million. The PSOE will request at the commission the immediate creation of a monitoring table with residents and shopkeepers, with a clear schedule, and that the works be guaranteed to be finished before the end of 2026.
The Ayuntamiento's initial commitment was to finish the works before this year's summer, but the delays have pushed the completion date toward the end of 2026. According to Ruiz Araujo, this situation has left local businesses with an occupancy of barely 40% on their terraces.
The head of Economía and of the distrito Este within the socialist group, Lorena Doña, asks that affected businesses be given tax relief due to the works and demands a line of direct aid and non-repayable economic compensation, which she considers insufficient compared to the current 50% terrace fee reduction. Doña points out that establishments such as the hamburguesería Mafalda or the chiringuito Miguelito el Cariñoso, open since 1975, have been forced to close temporarily, and also mentions unsanitary conditions and the presence of rodents due to the ground being dug up.
Doña further criticizes changes to the street furniture and the pavement of the paseo, and cites the removal of the shaded area of the Plaza Varadero as a traditional meeting point, according to complaints from neighborhood groups with whom the PSOE has met.

Ruiz Araujo warns, ahead of the upcoming remodeling of the paseo marítimo de El Palo, budgeted at 14,3 million euros over a 23-month period, that the same problems should not be repeated. He asks councillors Carmen Casero and Carlos Conde to plan the work in phases, listen to the neighborhood, and avoid the heaviest work during the summer months.
The PSOE motion formally proposes the creation of a permanent monitoring table with residents and shopkeepers of Pedregalejo within a maximum period of one week, in addition to the presentation of a binding timeline for the completion of the works before the end of the year.
