The spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group in the Ayuntamiento de Málaga, Mariano Ruiz Araujo, defended on Tuesday, September 15, the need to open a new stage in the city after more than three decades of Partido Popular governments, according to the note sent by the PSOE de Málaga. He did so during an informative breakfast with which the municipal group opened the political term.

Ruiz Araujo placed affordable housing as the most urgent priority for the city. As he explained, the municipal public rental housing stock has barely increased by 60 homes in the last decade, while a good part of the land reserved for protected housing (VPO) remains undeveloped and the Ayuntamiento continues selling municipal land assets.

Facing this situation, the Socialists propose substantially increasing the affordable housing stock, preserving public land intended for this purpose, mobilizing the land planned for VPO, acting within municipal competences to contain prices, and recovering for residential use homes that have moved into the tourist market.

The Socialist spokesperson also focused on the daily functioning of the city: public transport, traffic, street cleaning, and the state of the trees. He cited recurring problems in recent months, such as neighbors organizing to clean their own streets, pests, falling branches, loss of trees, daily traffic jams, and infrastructure deficiencies that this summer caused beach closures, as he related.

Citizen participation and the debate on the 30th

Ruiz Araujo criticized that the municipal government listens little in the face of citizen conflicts and mentioned, as examples, the signatures collected in defense of the Bosque Urbano on the former Repsol land, the opposition to the port skyscraper, the demands regarding Plaza de la Merced, and the neighborhood protests over the works on the Pedregalejo seafront promenade.

For this reason, he announced that the PSOE will present a new citizen participation model that, in his words, is «stable, useful and with real capacity to influence municipal decisions».

The Socialist spokesperson also referred to the upcoming Debate sobre el Estado de la Ciudad, scheduled for the 30th, and asked that it serve to solve current problems instead of announcing long-term projects.

Ruiz Araujo closed his speech linking these proposals to the idea that future generations can continue living in Málaga without this depending on income or having inherited a home.
