What you need to know to give blood
Who can give blood
- Be between 18 and 65 years old.
- Weigh more than 50 kilos.
- Feel well on the day.
- Bring your ID card or another identity document.
How often
- At least 2 months must pass between donations.
- At most 4 times a year for women and 6 for men.
- If your last donation was before July 18, you can give blood again.
Before you go
- You do not need to fast. If you give blood in the morning, have breakfast first.
- If you give blood in the afternoon, wait at least two hours after lunch and avoid heavy meals.
- Having your period or taking the pill does not stop you giving blood. If you take other medication or have been ill, the medical staff will assess it on the spot.
- After getting a tattoo you must wait four months.
What happens, and afterwards
- First, a short check-up: weight, pulse, blood pressure and a drop of blood to check your haemoglobin.
- The donation itself takes about ten minutes and is about 450 millilitres.
- Afterwards, drink plenty of fluids, do not smoke for two hours and avoid alcohol and hard exercise that day.
- Keep pressure on your arm for at least an hour. If you feel dizzy, lie down with your legs raised.
You can also sign up as a bone marrow donor at the Transfusion Centre or at any blood drive.
