Mijas and the beach bars bet on golf to extend the season
The Councillor for Tourism of Mijas, Francisco Jerez, and the Association of Beach Bars have analysed the summer season and the prospects for autumn and winter, with the arrival of golfers as a way to maintain activity outside the summer.
The Mijas Town Council and the beach bars in the municipality have addressed the need to keep the hospitality activity going once the summer is over. According to the Council, the Councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, met with representatives of the sector, headed by the president of the Asociación de Chiringuiteros de Mijas, Carlos Morales, at the Royal Beach beach bar, in Calahonda.
Golf as an autumn customer
The meeting served to take stock of the summer season and to learn about the establishments' prospects for the coming months. The business owners point out that the arrival of golf enthusiasts from September onwards can help to keep the beach bars active, since these are visitors who tend to stay for several days and also generate spending in hotels, restaurants and taxis.
The Council explains that the Department of Tourism carries out international promotional actions aimed at this segment. Jerez has indicated that this is work whose results are not immediate, but that it is beginning to bear fruit, and he has valued the fact that the business owners report a greater presence of golfers.
A longer season
According to the councillor, one of the aims of the municipal tourism promotion is to encourage activity throughout the year. He recalled that previously many hotels and beach bars closed with the arrival of winter, whereas now there are establishments that stay open until the end of November and even some that are considering continuing all winter.
Morales has highlighted the importance of domestic tourism during the month of August and the need to adapt to the evolution of demand and to rising costs. He has also valued the spending capacity of golf tourism and the fact that its visitors tend to spend several days in the municipality.
Contact with the sector
Both parties have agreed on the importance of maintaining fluid communication between the Department of Tourism and the professionals in the sector in order to learn about their needs and address the challenges of the coming months. The councillor has pointed out that direct contact with the business owners makes it possible to adapt the initiatives to the characteristics of each area of the coastline.
