The Museo Picasso Málaga hosts for the first time an encounter between the work of Edvard Munch (1863-1944) and that of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). The exhibition, titled Munch-Picasso, brings together a hundred paintings, drawings and prints that explore the affinities between both creators and how they transformed the artistic language of the 20th century.
An imaginary dialogue
The exhibition proposes a fictional dialogue between two artists who never met. As explained by the curator, Paloma Alarcó, the exhibition "narrates an imaginary encounter between both artists and explores impossible dialogues between two disparate personalities who never met". The tour is organised into thematic sections spread across two floors of the museum, around love, death, solitude, anguish, sexuality and modern life.
The second floor traces the biographical trajectory of both with sections such as Self-Portraits, Facing Death, Nocturnes, Femme fragile-Femme fatale and Love-pain. The ground floor brings together Nudes and Joy of Life. In addition, a didactic room allows consulting biographical data of the two painters.
A day to delve deeper
On the morning of Friday, October 30, the museum holds a day dedicated to the issues raised by the exhibition, aimed at professionals in the artistic and cultural field, students and the general public. Paloma Alarcó; Trine Otte Bak Nielsen, curator of the Munchmuseet in Oslo; and the University of Málaga professors María Jesús Martínez Silvente and Eugenio Carmona will take part. The session will have simultaneous Spanish-English translation and will conclude with a round table and a question-and-answer session.
Catalogue and audio guide
On the occasion of the exhibition, a 232-page catalogue has been published, edited in Spanish and English, with essays by Paloma Alarcó, Trine Otte Bak Nielsen and Vinyet Panyella. The exhibition also has an audio guide in Spanish and English.
The exhibition is organised by the Museo Picasso Málaga in collaboration with the Munchmuseet in Oslo and the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (FABA), with the sponsorship of the Fundación Unicaja and loans from museums such as The ALBERTINA Museum, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Musée national Picasso-Paris, the Museu Picasso de Barcelona, the Nasjonalmuseet, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Tate.
