The El Torreón restaurant, in La Cala, opened the 11th Rice Week this Monday, October 26, which will run until Sunday, November 1. During those days the establishment will serve a different rice dish each day as part of a set-price menu for 35 euros, with dessert and wine included, according to Salvador Gallardo, co-owner of the restaurant.
A set menu with a charitable side
The event keeps its charitable character. On Thursday, October 29, part of the proceeds from what the public consumes will go to cancer research, in the middle of the breast cancer campaign, as detailed by Mari Carmen Gómez, local president of the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC) in Mijas.
On the opening day, attendees tasted mixed salad, fried fish and a blind seafood paella.
Tribute to Belén Guerra
The opening of the gastronomic week also served to pay tribute to Belén Guerra, president of the Grupo Parroquial de Santa Teresa, whom the restaurant wanted to recognize for her dedication to La Cala traditions. Guerra received a plaque and the medalla de hermana mayor, a distinction that did not exist until now and that was presented to her by the members of the board of directors.
"It was a gift I wasn't expecting because until now the medalla del hermano mayor didn't exist, it's one more small step we're taking. I will always wear it with pride," said the honoree.
Guerra's family and friends attended the lunch, among them her parents, her sister, her husband and two of her three children. Also present were the mayor of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP); the parish priest of La Cala, Fernando Luque; members of the board of directors of the parish group and PSOE councillors of Mijas.
Councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP) highlighted that she is "one of our role models, always helping and working." Socialist councillor Josele González thanked people like Belén Guerra and her board of directors for working voluntarily to keep these traditions alive.
