The Málaga Metro begins concreting the tunnel between Hilera and Eugenio Gross
The Junta de Andalucía has begun placing and concreting the first slab that will cover the tunnel of the second section of the Metro extension, a preliminary step to allow the redevelopment of the streets affected by the works.

The works on the second section of the extension of the Metro de Málaga, between Hilera and Eugenio Gross, have entered a new phase with the start of the placement and concreting of the first slab that will cover the tunnel. This slab is the necessary previous step in order to begin redeveloping the road space occupied by the works, according to the note sent by the Consejería de Fomento y Movilidad.
The first section of slab already executed is 13 metres long and is located between the connection point with the Guadalmedina-Hilera section and the intersection with calle Honduras, next to calle Santa Elena. It is 8.3 metres wide and one metre thick; to build it, more than ten tonnes of rebar were placed and 108 cubic metres of reinforced concrete were poured.
The works will continue on calle Santa Elena towards calle Martínez Maldonado until completing 140 linear metres of slab, which will represent one out of every five metres of the total route between Hilera and Eugenio Gross.
Currently, the execution level of the screens —the walls that longitudinally delimit the tunnel and the future station— reaches 52%. The screens between calle Honduras and the intersection with Martínez Maldonado are already completed, in addition to the sections of the working ramp on avenida de la Purísima. Work is also underway on the screens of the section between calles Rafaela and Martínez de la Rosa and in the surroundings of the future station La Trinidad.
The construction method used, known as «Cut & Cover», consists of first executing the longitudinal screens and then concreting the slab that covers the tunnel, which allows the surface to be recovered sooner and reduces the impact of the works on the neighbourhood. Once the slab up to Martínez Maldonado is completed, the excavation of earth between screens will begin, in two levels, until reaching the bottom slab where the track platform will go.
In parallel, the works to divert and restore affected services continue in this section: communications networks, sanitation, water supply, gas and electricity. This part of the work is managed by the Agencia de Obra Pública and carried out by the UTE formed by FCC Construcción, Eiffage Infraestructuras and Canteras de Almargen.
The consejero de Fomento y Movilidad, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, has pointed out that this new step «is the prerequisite for addressing the redevelopment of the surface in the sections where the screens have already been executed», which will allow, as he explained, «progressively recovering the public roadway in order to reduce inconvenience to residents».
Section 2, which will reach the future Hospital Virgen de la Esperanza, began in June 2025, has an execution period of 36 months, a length of 653 metres and an investment of close to 47 million euros. It will include the La Trinidad station, with access from avenida de la Purísima, and a ventilation and emergency exit shaft at the intersection of calle Martínez Maldonado with Eugenio Gross.
The complete extension of the Metro to the future Hospital Virgen de la Esperanza will be 1.8 kilometres long, fully underground, and is divided into three sections, all under construction, each with its own station. The total estimated budget, which includes civil works, installations, architecture and railway signalling, is around 244 million euros, co-financed with FEDER funds from the European Union.
