The PSOE will bring a plan to the City Council to prevent pollution on the beaches
The Grupo Municipal Socialista will present a motion on Monday to modernize the sewage and drainage network following the beach closures recorded this summer in Málaga.

The Grupo Municipal Socialista will bring to the Comisión de Pleno de Sostenibilidad Medioambiental a motion with an emergency plan to prevent new episodes of contamination on the beaches of Málaga, after the closures and bathing restrictions recorded this summer.
The proposal suggests drawing up, within a maximum period of six months, a Plan Municipal de Modernización y Adaptación de la Red de Saneamiento y Drenaje, with a horizon of at least ten years, that includes diagnosis, priorities, investments, financing and an execution schedule. Among the specific measures are speeding up the separation of the wastewater and stormwater networks, studying the construction of new storm tanks and retention reservoirs, and identifying the critical points of the network.
The socialist spokesman, Mariano Ruiz Araujo, has argued that «the governing team of the Partido Popular cannot simply close the beaches when contamination appears or blame it on the rain» and has asked to «reinforce and modernize the saneamiento and drenaje network» in order to act before the episodes occur.

The motion also includes the creation of a municipal map of critical points of saneamiento and drenaje, identifying the areas with capacity problems, floods, relief outlets, discharges or risk of affecting the coastline. Councillor Begoña Medina, who will defend the motion on Monday, has stated that «we cannot prevent what we have not located» and has asked that the Ayuntamiento and the Empresa Municipal de Aguas de Málaga (EMASA) explain what happened at each beach closure this summer, what analyses were carried out and what measures have been adopted to prevent it from happening again.
The PSOE also demands improving the public information system on bathing water quality, so that incidents, analyses and measures adopted when there is a risk to bathing can be consulted in an accessible and up-to-date way.
According to the motion, monitoring of the plan should make it possible to check every year what works have been done, how much has been invested, what actions remain pending and how the city's separate network is evolving.
