Science in Space

The format 'Hablando se entiende la ciencia', hosted by the communicator Javier Atencia, is developed around round tables that will address different current topics through the lens of research, fostering debate and the exchange of impressions with attendees.

In this case, the session 'Ciencia en el espacio' will feature the following talks:
· Robotics oriented to space missions / Carlos Pérez del Pulgar (Departamento de Lenguajes y Ciencias de la Computación)

During the talk, the latest advances in the field of space exploration through the use of robots will be addressed, as well as the main contributions being made from the Laboratorio de Robótica Espacial of the Universidad de Málaga.
· The trio of Iberian eclipses: 2026, 2027 and 2028 / Antonio David García Gil (Departamento de Física Aplicada I) and Francisco Villatoro Machuca (Departamento de Lenguajes y Ciencias de la Computación)

Between August 2026 and January 2028, the Iberian Peninsula will be the stage for an exceptional astronomical sequence: three solar eclipses in less than a year and a half, two of them total and one annular. The talks will address the so-called "trio of Iberian eclipses" from an educational yet rigorous perspective, explaining why eclipses occur, what geometric conditions must be met for the Moon to hide the Sun, why not all eclipses are the same, when and from where each of them will be visible, as well as basic tips for planning the observation.
· Communications for and by Space: connecting the Earth, looking beyond / Sergio Fortes Rodríguez (Departamento de Ingeniería de Comunicaciones)

The deployment of new satellite networks and their integration with terrestrial communications are transforming the way we understand global connectivity. The talk will address how satellites, non-terrestrial networks, low-orbit constellations and integration with mobile networks make it possible to bring connectivity beyond the traditional limits of terrestrial infrastructure. Likewise, an educational overview will be presented of the technologies that make it possible to communicate with Earth from space and, at the same time, use telecommunications as a fundamental tool to explore, operate and understand what happens beyond our planet.
