What it is

The Nerja Fair is the town's main festival and is held in honour of its two patron saints, the Virgen de las Angustias and Saint Michael the Archangel. It is one of the most awaited events in the local calendar and brings together people from Nerja, residents of Maro and visitors.

The religious side starts before the fair: a Mass and transfer procession in late September and a triduum in honour of the patron saints in early October. During the fair itself, the central event is the Mass and solemn procession in which the Virgen de las Angustias and Saint Michael the Archangel are carried together through the streets of Nerja.

The fair opens with the pregón in front of the Town Hall, accompanied by the Municipal Band, and with the gala in which the Fair Queen is chosen in Plaza de España, which is also the stage for the big concerts. The rides and marquees are at the Huertos de Carabeo fairground, and the daytime fair takes place in the town centre and at the Balcón de Europa.

Where

The pregón is given in front of the Town Hall, and Plaza de España hosts the Queen's gala and the concerts. The fairground, with the rides and the marquees (including one for riders), is at Huertos de Carabeo. The daytime fair, with children's activities and local groups, spreads across the town centre and the Balcón de Europa. The patron saints' procession winds through the streets of the town.

Customs and traditions

The choice of the Fair Queen, at a gala in Plaza de España, is one of the most traditional events of the festival. The concerts in Plaza de España are free.

A few days before the fair, the Nerja Fair Urban Race and Race Walking Trophy are held, starting and finishing at the Balcón de Europa; in 2026 the race reached its 69th edition.

The last day of the fair is Children's Day, with the rides at their cheapest. On the religious side, Mass, the transfer procession, the triduum and the joint procession of the Virgen de las Angustias and Saint Michael the Archangel.
