The Axarquía region and the Sicilian city of Noto (Italy) have formalised a twinning agreement during the first edition of the FIAX · Raíces con Futuro fair, held at the Vélez-Málaga exhibition centre. The agreement was signed by the president of the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol-Axarquía, Jorge Martín, and the mayor of Noto, Corrado Figura, who took part in the fair's institutional events with Italy as guest country.
According to the organisers, the twinning establishes a basis for bilateral cooperation to exchange experiences and good practices between both territories, boost economic and cultural collaboration and open channels for relations in tourism, gastronomy, promotion of local products and territorial development.
Three days of fair
FIAX has brought together over three days producers, companies and institutions from farming, fishing and the agri-food sector, with more than 70 exhibition spaces dedicated to agriculture, livestock, fishing, crafts, gastronomy, machinery, innovation and professional services. The event, organised by the Asociación Impulsa Axarquía, chaired by Cynthia Díaz Vallejo, has had the participation of the Ayuntamiento de Vélez-Málaga, the Diputación de Málaga, the Junta de Andalucía, the Mancomunidad itself and the Federación Andaluza de Municipios y Provincias.
The Diputación has been present through the Sabor a Málaga brand, with a 150-square-metre space and twelve member companies that have offered tastings, direct sales and demonstrations. Representatives and entrepreneurs from Bolivia have also taken part, which has broadened the event's international reach.
Gastronomy and parallel activities
Among the activities were the Reto MasterChef, cooking demonstrations and tastings, with the espeto de sardinas as one of the star dishes in the Zona Fuego alongside traditional roasts. There have also been horse and mule displays, and a dog show organised with the Sociedad Canina Costa del Sol, as well as activities aimed at children and families.
Upcoming editions
Impulsa Axarquía has expressed its intention to give continuity to the project and turn FIAX into a regular event for companies and professionals in the region's primary sector.
