Costa del Sol hotels have a way to reduce their energy spending on the table. The Instituto Tecnológico Hotelero (ITH), together with the Asociación de Empresarios Hoteleros de la Costa del Sol (AEHCOS), has held a session of the ITH Hotel Energy Meetings cycle at the Hotel NH Málaga, aimed at professionals in the sector to address energy management and the solutions that allow reducing consumption and optimizing costs.
Savings of more than 120,000 euros per year
According to the data presented at the meeting, the projects analyzed within the ITHSaveHotel energy renovation program have achieved average economic savings of more than 120,000 euros per year per establishment, with a reduction in consumption of approximately 760,200 kWh per year and 202 fewer tons of CO₂ per year per project. The program, subsidized by the Secretaría de Estado de Turismo, offers hotels specialized advice to identify improvements and evaluate their viability.
The session analyzed how to approach the renovation of a hotel, from the diagnosis of needs and investment planning to air conditioning, domestic hot water, lighting and facility control. Representatives from Soho Boutique Hoteles, Gran Hotel del Coto and Hotel NH Málaga took part, along with companies from the energy and technology sector.
Digitalization and consumption control
The meeting included a block on digitalization, monitoring and maintenance, with sustainable lighting solutions, smart room control and digital water management. The closing served to present ten lessons on the energy renovation of a hotel, focused on combining planning, adapted technology and monitoring of results.
The director of the Tourism Area of the Ayuntamiento de Málaga, Jonathan Gómez Punzón, noted at the opening the need to modernize facilities and warned of the limitations of the electrical grid's capacity. He mentioned municipal initiatives such as the interactive solar map and the Oficina Municipal de Información Fotovoltaica to promote self-consumption. The executive vice president of AEHCOS, Javier Hernández, called on the administrations to schedule calls for aid and incentives that stimulate business investment.
