'Here Comes the Cruise Ship!': the game about crossing central Málaga while dodging tourists

Topics Plaza de la Merced

InforMálaga launches a mobile game: five errands around the centre, from the Alameda to the Merced, dodging groups, scooters and terraces before the next cruise ship docks. It's free, a game lasts a couple of minutes and it has a ranking.

You leave the Alameda Principal with the morning ahead of you and five errands around the centre. What you weren't expecting is that another cruise ship docks today. And another. And another. «¡Que llega el crucero!» is the new game from InforMálaga. You play it on your phone or computer, without downloading anything, and each game lasts a couple of minutes. The idea is familiar to anyone who has tried to cross calle Larios on a day with a ship in the port: getting to your destination without bumping into half the world.

How to play

Your character only walks forward. You just have to dodge: swipe your finger or tap one side of the screen on your phone, or use the arrow keys on your computer. If you crash, you stop for a moment, and that moment counts.

The five errands

  • Your job, on calle Larios: gleaming marble, summer awnings and balconies.
  • The Mercado de Atarazanas, with its Nasrid door and the stained-glass window.
  • The Plaza de la Constitución and the fountain of Génova.
  • The Catedral, la Manquita, with the tower it is missing.
  • The Plaza de la Merced, with the obelisk and Picasso sitting on his bench.

The cruise ship that won't leave

At the top of the screen a countdown runs: «Próximo crucero en…». When it reaches zero the horn sounds, the ship rises above the rooftops and the street fills up almost twice as much. The cruise ships that dock don't leave all day, so each one weighs more than the last. With three too many on the same errand, you can't even walk and the game ends.

What slows you down and what helps you

What slows you down

  • Groups in a line behind the guide's umbrella or little flag.
  • Couples who stop in the middle of the street to take their photo.
  • Scooters that go past fast.
  • Bar terraces that keep growing.
  • Wheeled suitcases, a stag do and the pigeons.

What helps you

  • A mitad at a bar counter, which gives you a burst of speed.
  • A biznaga, which makes people step aside.
  • The shortcuts only a malagueño knows, like the Pasaje de Chinitas and calle Strachan.

Points, ranking and challenges

The sooner you arrive and the fewer ships have docked along the way, the more points you get. At the end you see your score and your best mark, and you can play again or challenge someone with a message for WhatsApp. If you log in to your InforMálaga account, your games count in the game's ranking, with your alias, and add to the portal's general ranking. You can also play without an account: your best mark is saved on your phone.
