The Casares Town Council has set the maximum area that photovoltaic installations may occupy at 5% of the municipal area. The measure accompanies the construction of the Casares I, II and III parks, totaling 96 megawatts.
The Casares Town Council has established that photovoltaic plants may not occupy more than 5% of the municipal area. The municipal regulation defines what type of projects may be implemented and allows their visual and environmental effects to be assessed, including those affecting wildlife and biodiversity, according to the Council.
The rule comes alongside the construction of the Casares I, II and III parks, whose groundbreaking ceremony was held this Tuesday, October 20. The installation will have 96 megawatts of power and an estimated annual production of 169.9 gigawatt hours, equivalent to the consumption of some 52,300 households. The investment exceeds 28 million euros.
Fewer emissions and underground lines
The project includes measures to reduce its impact on the surroundings: the power evacuation lines will run underground and the electrical substation will be located next to the plant area. According to the Town Council, the parks will prevent the emission of some 34,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
The mayor, Juan Luis Villalón, has defended the compatibility between renewables and the territory: «It has been a titanic effort to prevent Casares from becoming a succession of photovoltaic panels». The Council states that it has rejected other projects when their impact was not compatible with the general interests of the municipality.
Acknowledgements and participants
Villalón has thanked Javier Sánchez Conde, initial promoter of the project, and Pilar García Rodríguez, representing Mexens–Technique Solaire, for their involvement. He also acknowledged the collaboration of the landowners, the technical teams and the administrations involved. Representatives of the Junta de Andalucía and the Diputación de Málaga took part in the event.
