The Festival de Cine Fantástico de la Universidad de Málaga (Fancine) will hold its 36th edition from November 10 to 17 at the Albéniz cinema and other venues in the capital, with 83 titles spread across the Albéniz lineup, the previous cycles and the special sessions. The event is organized in partnership with the Festival de Málaga and with the support of public and private entities, and this year carries the slogan "Programados para amar".

Ten films in competition

The Official Section consists of ten feature films competing for the 6,000 euros of the best film award. Among them is "La desconocida", by Arthur Harari, with Léa Seydoux heading the cast, and "Dreamquil", Alex Prager's feature debut. Spanish representation comes with "Salitre", by Norma Vila, and the Italian Paolo Strippoli returns to the event with "The Spiral". Titles such as "Hen", "Impostores", "Breeder", "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma", "Kill Me" and "Never After Dark" complete the selection. The festival will host two Spanish premières: "Little Doors" and "The Fertilizer Home".

Opening and closing

For the first time, a Spanish feature film will open Fancine. It will be "5 minutos más", a comedy by Javier Ruiz Caldera written by and starring Berto Romero, which will be screened out of competition. The opening ceremony moves forward to Tuesday, November 10, given the general strike called for Wednesday 11, a day on which there will be no activities or screenings. The festival will resume its schedule on Thursday 12 and will keep the closing on Tuesday 17 with "Family Movie", co-directed by Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick.

More sections and awards

The Informative Section will include "Victorian Psycho" and "The Ones Who Grieve". Horror Zone will bring together five titles, among them "River", and Ánima Zone will feature "Le Vertige", Quentin Dupieux's first animated feature film. The "Programados para amar" section will bring together four feature films, and Zona Iberoamericana will feature five projects in collaboration with the Festival de Málaga. The awards change: the Official Jury will decide only the best film, with 6,000 euros, and the honorary distinctions without financial endowment are eliminated. The Young Jury, made up of seven UMA students, will for the first time grant an award of 1,500 euros to the best feature film of the Official Section, in addition to the short film awards, endowed with 1,500 euros each. The spectators will choose the audience awards: 1,000 euros for the best feature film of the Official Section, another 1,000 for Zona Iberoamericana and 500 for each short film category.

Parallel activities

Outside the Albéniz, the Contenedor Cultural, the Rectorado and other university venues will host the Proyecto Pedagógico, the soundtrack concert, the KPOP contest, the Asian Party, the children's workshops and the Cómic e Ilustración and Microrrelatos awards. Added to this is the first UMA Graphic Festival, on October 22 and 23 at the Facultad de Bellas Artes, and special sessions such as "Drag me Rocky Horror Picture Show" in Teatinos and the screening of "Moon" at the Facultad de Ciencias. The Casa de Socorro incubator joins as a venue.

Tickets for the screenings at the Albéniz cinema will go on sale on Friday, October 30 at a price of 4 euros. Schedules may be consulted at fancine.org. The presentation was chaired by the rector of the Universidad de Málaga, Teodomiro López, accompanied by the vice-rector of Culture, María Rosario Gutiérrez, and representatives of the Festival de Málaga, the Diputación, Promálaga, the Fundación Unicaja and the Fundación Málaga.
