The Junta adds 1,216 FP teachers in Andalusia for the new school year
Andalusian Vocational Training strengthens its public teaching staff amid the growth in provision, which this year reaches 224,600 students, 14,000 more than last year, according to the Department of Education.

The Department of Education of the Junta de Andalucía has added 1,216 more teachers to Vocational Training (FP) programmes to meet the increased educational provision across the whole region, as announced by the minister María del Carmen Castillo during a visit to the Instituto de Educación Secundaria (IES) Santa Bárbara in Málaga, on the occasion of the start of the school year.
FP reaches 224,600 students in Andalusia this year, after adding 14,000 new students. 79% study at public centres, a total of 177,293 people. Since the 2018-2019 school year, enrolment has grown by almost 50%, with more than 76,700 new enrolments, two out of every three in the public network.
This year, the Department has offered almost 200,000 FP places, 78,000 more than in 2018, with a special boost to the distance-learning mode, which adds 28,265 places, and 2,000 new places in the in-person mode. In Andalusia, 3,832 training cycles, specialisation courses and FP access courses can be studied at publicly funded centres, spread across 197 different qualifications.
Across non-university education as a whole, 887,532 students have started the school year in Andalusia, at 1,903 centres. More than 695,500 do so in public schools and around 116,500 in state-subsidised private schools. As in previous years, Secondary education records fewer students due to the drop in the birth rate: 11,600 fewer students, split between ESO (7,600) and Bachillerato (4,000), although the Department notes that in these stages students usually join in the weeks following the start of the school year.
Despite the drop in enrolment, the Department maintains the 600 reinforcement teachers agreed with the unions CSIF, ANPE and UGT, an agreement that allows students with special educational needs to be counted twice in classrooms with higher ratios. The public Secondary teaching staff in Andalusia totals 56,524 teachers this year.
Data for Málaga
In the province of Málaga, 162,714 students have started the school year at 313 centres, of whom more than 123,637 are in public schools and around 21,300 in state-subsidised private schools. The public Secondary teaching staff in the province reaches 9,982 teachers, while ESO records 1,026 fewer students than the previous year.
In FP, the province has 36,581 students, 1,777 more than last year, 70% at public centres (25,675). The Department has offered in Málaga more than 22,100 new FP entry places with public funding, with 560 offerings between training cycles and specialisation courses.
IES Santa Bárbara, a reference centre in the healthcare field, is adding two new cycles this year: the mid-level cycle in Auxiliary Nursing Care and the higher-level cycle in Emergency Coordination and Civil Protection. The institute has 1,000 Secondary, Bachillerato and FP students, attended to by 106 teachers, and offers a total of nine training cycles.
The Department also highlighted that this year there are 494 public educational centres with improvement works, with 551 actions completed or planned to be finished before the end of the year, a budget of more than 106 million euros and around 230,000 students benefited. Among the works mentioned is that of IES Fernando de los Ríos in Málaga.
