The mayor of Alhaurín de la Torre, Joaquín Villanova, has proposed to the Junta de Andalucía reviving the Vial Distribuidor project, a newly built road that would link the municipality with the capital's industrial estates, the Centro de Transportes de Mercancías (CTM) and the Guadalhorce dual carriageway (A-357). The route would also include a connection to a new Cercanías train station on line C-2 that would be built in the Tarajal area, within the municipality of Málaga.
Fewer cars heading to the capital
According to the mayor, this road could absorb around 30% of traffic by offering an alternative to those who travel daily to the industrial estates in western Málaga, the university area or the Hospital Clínico. Villanova has noted that residents of Churriana would also benefit.
The proposal has been raised and studied at the Foro de Alcaldes y Alcaldesas «Málaga Metrópolis Global», in particular in the commissions held this year in Alhaurín de la Torre and in Fuengirola. The mayor has defended a «very broad vision» to solve mobility problems and has placed the actions in the short, medium and long term, including planning for the arrival of the Metro.
A station with a park-and-ride facility
In El Tarajal a new C-2 station and a park-and-ride facility are proposed for those who want to go to the centre of Málaga. Villanova has noted that it would be «only 6 kilometres as the crow flies» from Alhaurín de la Torre, although he has made the measure conditional on «multiplying by ten» the frequencies of the C-2, a line he considers «underused». The aim is to ease traffic on the A-357 and reduce the private vehicles travelling to Málaga from Alhaurín and other municipalities in the Valle del Guadalhorce.
The mayor has recalled that the design of the Vial Distribuidor was affected by the Acceso Norte al Aeropuerto de Málaga, dependent on the State, until the Junta and the Government reached an agreement to facilitate the execution of both roads. He has also stressed the need to study a Metro station between Alhaurín de la Torre and Churriana, in the context of the arrival of this means of transport at the airport, and has stated that Málaga is «the third most important airport on the peninsula and the only one without a Metro».
The widening of the A-404
The most immediate action is the completion of the widening of the A-404 road being carried out by the Junta de Andalucía between the Encuentro roundabout and the access to the A-7 dual carriageway. Villanova has announced that a visit from the regional minister of Public Works, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, is expected to supervise these works and study the Vial Distribuidor proposal.
The mayor has recalled that the Vial Distribuidor works were even awarded in 2009, although they never began, although a bridge was built over the railway tracks in the municipality of Málaga. Villanova has insisted that these actions must involve all administrations: town councils, the Junta de Andalucía and the central Government, since the Cercanías lines depend on the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
