The Málaga City Council has awarded the external veterinary care service for the animals at the Municipal Animal Protection Centre (CEPAM). The contract includes emergency consultations, specialist consultations, diagnostic tests and hospitalisation, according to the Area of Environmental Sustainability.

What the service covers

The contract also covers animals collected in emergencies by the Animal Collection Service outside the opening hours of the municipal facilities, that is, Monday to Friday between 22.00 and 8.00 hours, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The awarded company is SOS Animal Catycan, S.L., for an amount of 60.000 euros (VAT included) and an execution period of one year.

How the care is provided

The animals or the diagnostic samples are transferred to the veterinary hospital by the City Council's Animal Collection Service. Care must be provided immediately upon the animal's arrival at the external veterinary centre, with the necessary attention. The company prepares a report for each transferred animal or sample sent and undertakes not to cause unnecessary damage, suffering or stress, with surgical interventions adjusted to the animal protection and welfare regulations.

Requirements of the centre and staff

The facilities must be equipped for health care, including diagnostic procedures, surgery and hospital admission, with monitoring of the animals' condition. The centre must have qualified staff, veterinarians and assistants, in sufficient numbers to fulfil the services of the contract. Among the contracted services are ordinary and emergency consultations, clinical check-ups with a specialist, analyses, diagnostic tests such as ultrasounds, electrocardiograms or X-rays, pre-operative tests, hospitalisation and surgery.
