The PSOE and Con Málaga municipal groups in Málaga City Council have presented a joint motion to demand protection for the public care system for victims of gender-based violence, specifically the Comprehensive Assessment Units for Gender-Based Violence (UVIG). The initiative is debated in the Social Rights committee on Thursday, October 22. According to both groups, the aim is that care for victims is not subordinated to partisan interests or ideological changes. They warn that management of these resources by Vox would put the protection system and women's safety at risk.

What they demand

The motion calls for stable funding, more resources and comprehensive care including psychological, legal and social support, as well as protection for the children of victims. Con Málaga maintains that any change in the organization of these resources must respect the independence of their professionals and preserve the experience of the teams that care for victims. The socialist spokesperson, Mariano Ruiz Araujo, has stated that "the safety and lives of women cannot be part of any kind of negotiation" and has accused the PP and Juanma Moreno Bonilla of handing over care responsibilities for victims to Vox. He recalled that Málaga is the province with the highest number of women killed by their partners and ex-partners.

The figures and the political debate

Socialist councillor Rosa del Mar Rodríguez has noted that there are seven women killed in the province and thousands of active cases in the VioGén system, and has criticized giving legal responsibility for protection to a party that has called the UVIG "chiringuitos". Councillor and Con Málaga spokesperson Nico Sguiglia has argued that protecting victims "cannot depend on partisan interests" and has called on the PP to guarantee feminist advances and not take steps backwards against what he describes as a reactionary wave.

The procedure

The motion is presented jointly by PSOE and Con Málaga and is debated in the Social Rights committee of Málaga City Council on Thursday, October 22.
