The Socialist Municipal Group will bring to the next Plenary of the Málaga City Council a request to stop the transfer of caravans from Sacaba to an area of the La Virreina Periurban Park and to seek an alternative plot with basic services.
The Socialist Municipal Group will demand at the next Plenary Session of Málaga City Council that the transfer of caravans from Sacaba to a peri-urban park in La Virreina be halted and that an alternative plot meeting the necessary conditions be sought. This was announced by the socialist spokesperson, Mariano Ruiz Araujo, after a visit to the area alongside councillors Pablo Orellana and Lorena Doña and residents of the neighbourhood.
Lack of services and fire risk
Ruiz Araujo maintains that the chosen land does not meet the conditions to host a settlement of these characteristics. He points out that it is an area with significant vegetation, which in his view could create a fire hazard, and that it lacks water and sanitation supplies. He adds that the space is just a few metres from a public school and that the arrival of caravans would overload the neighbourhood's facilities and infrastructure.
The socialist spokesperson also raises doubts about the regularity of the procedure followed to cede the plot, as it is a green area intended for the use and enjoyment of residents. He considers it necessary to clarify on what terms the cession has been made and whether it complies with regulations. «We call on the government team to halt the procedure while an adequate alternative is studied that guarantees both care for the people evicted from Sacaba and the wellbeing of residents,» he stated.
Residents' discontent
Ana Vera, a resident of La Virreina, explained that residents learned of the decision through a news item, without prior communication from the City Council. «We found out on Sunday 8 in the morning with a brief news item in the press and with a small laminated sign they have put up here,» she recounted.
Vera stressed that residents are not against the affected families and that they want them to find a suitable area. However, she warns that the neighbourhood already suffers from cleaning, sanitation and maintenance problems and that it lacks water, showers and infrastructure to host the families. She therefore called for the cession to be revoked and for the City Council to explain the reasons for the decision. «No one here has called us or asked us,» she concluded.
Next step
The PSOE's request will be raised at the next Plenary Session of Málaga City Council, without the information specifying the date of that session.
