The Fuengirola City Council has launched an additional cleaning plan aimed at restoring street pavements and improving hygiene in public spaces. The action focuses on stubborn stains that routine street-cleaning procedures fail to remove and that require specific machinery and specialised products.

What is cleaned and with what means

The work includes removing wax residue, grease stains and tyre marks, as well as eliminating chewing gum and the residue they leave on the pavement. Action is also taken on stains caused by animal urine on streets and on street furniture such as lampposts and benches. In the latter case, the interventions add sanitising and deodorising of the affected surfaces. The team consists of two specialised operators and a van with a 1,000-litre water tank. The technical means include a high-pressure washer, with a minimum pressure of 300 bar, and a heating system that allows the water to come out at at least 95 degrees. It is completed with a pavement scrubber and accessories adaptable to each surface and type of dirt.

Biodegradable products

As detailed by the councillor for Cleaning, Carmen Díaz, degreasers and solvents formulated with terpenes are used, chosen to make it easier to remove stains without damaging materials or urban elements. The products are biodegradable and aim to reduce the environmental impact of the actions. The councillor notes that this additional plan "allows us to reinforce routine cleaning work by acting on difficult stains that negatively affect the appearance and hygienic conditions of our streets".

Area of action

The measure is included as an improvement in the specifications of the cleaning service, which allows intervention on 20,000 square metres per year of municipally owned roads. The City Council states that this reinforces the resources allocated to maintaining public spaces and incorporates a specific treatment for areas that need more intensive intervention.
